Next to Pilgrims Cottage is the 3 acre field destined to be an orchard, whose purpose is to be productive, wildlife-friendly and beautiful.
The design of the area is experimental (to us at least!). As well as the trees, there will be soft fruits and other useful plants growing under them – along the lines of a Forest Garden. There will be plenty of well-known fruits (both common and uncommon varieties) and also exciting, unusual and rare fruits, such as hardy kiwis, june berries and myrtle.
There will be five different areas, each peaking in productivity during a different season: Early summer; high summer; autumn; winter; and finally a wild flower meadow.
In time we hope to be able to make produce from the orchard available locally.
